Government debt has increased by $1.4 trillion—since January

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement Tuesday regarding the news that the national debt now exceeds $12 trillion for the first time in U.S. history: “

Americans got a double-dose of bad economic news this month. Days after learning that the unemployment rate ballooned past 10 percent, we learned that the national debt now exceeds $12 trillion for the first time in American history. This should serve as an urgent warning that the government can’t keep spending money it doesn’t have. Thousand-page bills that spend too much, borrow too much and tax too much are exactly the wrong approach for creating jobs. It’s my sincere hope that the administration will work with us on bipartisan efforts to reduce the debt, lower health care costs and help employers grow jobs.”

Total debt now exceeds $12 trillion for the first time in history. A link to the current debt total is here: http://www.treasurydirect.gov/NP/BPDLogin?application=np
